Shanxi (山西)
Approximately 400 kilometres southwest of Beijing, Shanxi is a cradle of Chinese civilization that in modern times became known for its abundant coal reserves. However, two wineries - Grace Vineyard in Jinzhong (晉中) prefecture, and Chateau Rongzi in Xiangning (鄉寧) county in Linfen (临汾) prefecture - have committed to reframing the province in a new light.
The continental climate and higher altitude allow for longer sunshine hours and higher diurnal range, where Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Muscat are grown. Vines are buried in the winter.
Grace Vineyard, led by Judy Chan, are producing some of the highest quality Bordeaux blends in China.
