Gloriville

橙照葵然

Often mentioned as one of the leading natural winemakers in the country, Chengzi’s dedication to capturing the terroir of northwestern Hebei is unrivalled amongst his peers. By taking over an established vineyard with plenty of varieties to experiment, Chengzi wields complete control over the vineyard and the winery.

With no interest in making wine elsewhere, Chengzi’s character is an exception in a well-travelled industry. His intentional and patient winemaking style focusses solely on the family vineyard, tended to by his aunties and uncles.

Organically farmed since 2018 and biodynamically farmed since 2023, he is one of the only winemakers in China able to take a complete zero-zero approach - no additions, no corrections, no added sulphites, no filtration, and no fining.

Bordering the Yang & Sanggan Rivers, at the foothills of the Great Wall of China, Chengzi’s family story is consistent with many others in the region - an agricultural family that began growing grapes in the mid-1980s to meet demand for China’s wine boom, fuelled by state-owned wineries. In 1999 the family began cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon themselves from a 10 hectare vineyard.

During his childhood, Chengzi did what he could in the vineyard and orchards, developing a strong connection to his hometown and unique affection for the terroir of Hebei. Despite that, he wasn’t drawn to winemaking and struggled to find appeal in the industrial wines being produced at the time. However, a chance encounter in Shanghai in 2013 exposed Chengzi to the ‘natural’ wine trend, inspiring him to take over his parents’ estate, immediately stopped the sale of grapes to large state-owned wineries where they would just be blended off into cheap table wine, and transitioned the winery into a completely independent, organically farmed, environmentally conscious vineyard.

Now, the winery is a family affair. Chengzi leads the viticulture and winemaking, with his parents, uncles and aunties supporting where they can. Multi-vintage wines are common, inspired by those in Champagne and traditional beer houses, intended to balance out oxidation and fruit.

Chengzi puts the success of his wines down to “a kind of chemical reaction” between his character and the land around him. He doesn’t have any formal winemaking training nor overseas vintage experience, but instead carries a career brewing beers and crafting cocktails across China.

Whilst Chengzi is attracted to ever changing, complex things, he also believes it takes a lot of time to become familiar with a place and understand it’s land. He has no intention to leave Hebei, instead investing his time to be present and surround himself with the unique offerings of this region.

Gloriville is as anti-establishment as it gets- grapes originally intended for industrial use - where they would have been subject to overhandling - have been fermented with no additions, no corrections, no added sulphites, no filtration, and no fining. As of 2023, the winery has been converted to entirely biodynamic principles, demonstrating Chengzi’s deep respect for nature and his immediate environment.
